16'-18' deep V's with front and rear casting decks are usually the best choice for most lakes. You want to be high in the boat in order to see follows and work muskie lures but you don't want the sides to be too high off the water or it will be a pain to land fish. Take the seats off the casting decks, add good rodholders, a bowmount trolling motor, and a trolling kicker if your main motor is too big.
The deep-V is not the best choice for rivers, though. There you really want a jet, but several other people around here have good ones, so I'll let them chime in.
Keep in mind the quality of the ramps you'll be using when picking a trailer.
The best compromise might be a semi-V aluminum bassboat with a jet, but what do I know, there are no rivers where I live right now.

Hello!
A bunch of us have jet boats, but they have serious limitations. Most jets are not ideal lake boats, and vice-versa. The nicest setup for both is a jet boat by Rockproof or Snyder, with a nice 9.9 or 15hp kicker and an electric big enough to move it nicely. This setup will let you troll the lakes very easily and still run in 3 or 4 inches of water when you want a shot of adrenaline while shooting through Foul Rift or some other skinny place on the river.
Take a look at Joe T's rig under the "Show me your boat" posting or at Mike's rig under the "Snyder" posting.
The Deep Vee's are great for lake fishing. Very stable and straight tracking (try that with a jet sled) and able to cut through 2' chop during those late November trips.
Most of us will never be able to do it, but the best solution would be a Deep Vee for lakes and a jet sled for rivers.... HHHMMMMMMM, wonder if I can talk her into THAT.
