Hey guys, just an FYI, you may be aware or may not. Jersey just passed a new Boating Safety Education Bill. If you get NJ Angler, check out page 12 of the Feb 2006 issue. What does this mean:
Basically it states that person born after 12/31/78 has to take the course immediately.
Between 12/31/68 to 12/31/78 has to take the course before 6/1/06.
Between 12/31/58 to 12/31/68 has until 6/1/07 to comply.
Between 12/31/48 to 12/31/58 has until 6/1/08 to take the course.
All other persons need to take the course by 6/1/09.
Here are the details:

I took this course some 17 years ago. It's pricey...
Enjoy the snow!

Most states are starting to require this type of boating safety education. The funny part is that when it wasn't required, it was free, and they couldn't get anyone to take it. Here in NM they actually give you two free nights camping if you take the thing. Once it's mandatory, it costs money. Of course, it's still 8 hours of your time you could spend doing something else.

I took the course last year at Mercer County Community College, $80 and 8 hours (2 nights) well worth the money and time. I think the coast guard offers the course on a weekend. They are trying to eliminate that temporary driver that leads to many accidents (usually drinking). [[%&]]
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I read in "The Fisherman" that out of state boaters 18 and older who operate a boat less than 90 days in NJ do not have to take a course in NJ but must be able to show proof of course from PA. It must be a course by NASBLA or Coast Guard.
PA offers the course online. I was going to look into whether or not this will meet NJ's requirements.

Damian,
This very issue has been a hot topic on other boards. Apparently you have to prove that you took an instructor led course from an outside state and that the online test wouldn't apply. Not sure if that is true but that seems to be the common interpretation.
I did locate the links for the "test-out" and have them bookmarked on my home pc. I will try and post that tonight.

Another cool site that let's you take a practice test. I wish it told you what you got wrong. I got a 92% without reading the manual and the state allows you to pass with a 70% so it shouldn't be a big deal. The questions on the PWC (Personal Water Craft) gave me trouble.

Bob,
There's seems to be alot of confusion floating around this topic. I've heard the same thing as you mentioned above and also heard that if you posses an instructor led certification from another state that you don't need to take the NJ test.

Here you go...

A quote from the site above says:
Out-of-state residents with written proof of the successful completion of a boat safety course are exempt from the boat license requirement.
