I've got a Mercury 25hsp 2-stroke, I got back in 2003, that "knock wood" hasn't given me a bit of trouble. Next to no maintenance, other than changing the fluid in the lower unit.

Not sure of your price range but a 4 stroke honda would be a very good, dependable and quiet outboard. I have a 50 but I've run Tom Sabia's 20 hp honda with the two of us and all of our gear in his boat and was very impressed with the speed.

I bought a brand new 20hp Merc this spring. I love it, It starts every time and is super quiet. Tohatsu makes all Mercs motors 20hp and under. Same engines just different badging, The tohatsu will be a few hundred cheaper. They also make all of Nissans motors. I went with the Merc version because 95% of the dealers in the Lehigh Valley seem to have an attitude when it comes to customers wanting to buy a product from them. Peters Marine was the only shop that didnt seem bothered that I walked through the door and they were super friendly and helpful.
