Hey guys, anyone ever have any problems with the brushes in the lower unit of their trolling motor burning up. I have had my new boat just over a year now, and the trolling motor has burned out twice since may of this year. The motor is a 12v 46lb thrust Motor Guide. It is the stock trolling motor for the 18ft tracker ProTeam 175TWx that I bought. Bower's Marine told me the first time it burned out that the motor was not intended for use on electric motor only lakes and it should only be used to "position" the boat while fishing. They told me to buy a transom mount for running around the lake. I did this and the bow mount still burned out again after only three or four trips. I am going to upgrade to a 70lb or better 24v unit, but I hate having to spend the money to replace this motor after only one year of use. Oh well, guess it beats having to drive 45 miles one way to get it repaired every two months.

I've never had a problem with motor guide I love my bow mount.one thing I would recomend especially on a 18 foot boat is get the biggest thrust you can afford.a 46lb is way to small for that 18 I have one on my 12 footer.if your always running it on hi all the time that can be a reason why your having problems.I was always told that your top speed should be at dial 3 not at max dial 5.that way your getting maximum life out of your battery each time out.instead of always running it on max.hope I explained this well enough I would say 70 lb or better would be the best option.go to cabelas at the end of the year they always have left overs I got mine 2 years ago originaly 650 reduced to 285.never had any problems

Spoke to the tech at Basspro shops in Harrisburg on Friday. Was told that there should be no reason why the trolling motor is giving me this much trouble. At any rate, I have Dieter who is going to sell me a Minn Kota Maxxum 80lb thrust 24v motor that came off of Mr. Tarditi's boat. $550.00 for a $1000 motor did not seem like a bad deal to me, so I grabbed the offer. My only question is, do I need to do anything with the battery charger hook up after I change the wiring on my two trolling motor batteries to accomdate the 24v motor. I have two batteries in the boat now for the 12v system. Hooked up in a series for more hours use. I am going to change the wiring around from the receptacle in the boat to the positve on one battery and the negative on the other and then run the wire from the other positive and negative terminal to create the 24v system. Will the on board charger still charge the batteries after this switch? Unfortunately I have to wait until Dieter finishes his Hawaii vacation next week.
