Cold Water notice

At the last meeting we discussed cold water . So I thought Id put up my annual cold water warning
Tis the season ,most of us fish right through the winter . I dont winterize because winter muskies can be hot .
It is dangerous though and can be deadly , cold water can kill you very quickly
1. Dont fish alone if you can help it ,the fish willl be there in the spring
2. Have a plan were you are going when you will get back.
3. Have a boat plan with your partner talk about it before you go , what to do if you go in the water ?, main thing is get the wet cloths of and share 1/2 your dry cloths with them , if the ramp is far maybe it will be a good choice to get to shore and start a fire first to warm them up . dont panic but dont waste time getting them warm.
If you do go in try and hold your mouth shut your first reaction in 35 degree water is a big gasp for air but it might be water.
4. I have matches in the boat just in case, extra jacket and at least a throw type preserver on deck not in storage. a musky rod make a great pole or if they get away and start to sink snag cloths with the lure.

Be safe and catch a bunch

For Immediate Release October 22, 2009 Contact: Dan Martin, danmartin@state.pa.us, 717-705-7849 Cold Water Increases Risk of Boating Fatalities Harrisburg, PA– The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) strongly encourages boaters to wear their life jackets on cold Pennsylvania waters. Cold water shock is a leading killer of boaters in Pennsylvania. It is caused by sudden immersion into water less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit. With water temperatures now falling into the 50 degree range, sudden immersion can kill a boater within seconds of submersion. The PFBC encourages boaters to be safe on the water by wearing their life jackets. “Too many people are dying because they don’t recognize the danger of cold water,” PFBC Boating and Access Director Dan Martin said. “Year after year, it’s the same story. Someone falls overboard or capsizes their small motorboat, canoe or kayak and drowns because of the effects of cold water shock.” Cold water shock causes an involuntary reflexive torso gasp. The victim will commonly inhale water, become disoriented, panic, and lose the ability to swim. “It is very common for even strong swimmers to go under very quickly in cold water,” Martin said. “They don’t have time to get hypothermia, another dangerous condition brought on by the cold; they drown too quickly f or hypothermia to be a factor.” “The sad thing is that all boating fatalities are preventable,” Martin said. The number one way to be safe on the water is to wear a life jacket. Eighty percent of all recreational boating fatalities could be prevented if the victim had been wearing a Coast Guard approved life jacket at the time of the accident.
Visit the PFBC’s website at http://www.state.pa.us to learn more about safe boating. BE SAFE. WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET.

Matt,
Great advice!

Sometimes you've got to "jiggle' it, and sometimes you've got to give it one big
"jerk"

Water temps are now in the 30's - it won't hurt anyone to look at this again.

The two most important things are:

Wear a life jacket if you are near the water.

Have a boat plan, and, before you leave the ramp, discuss it with your fishing partner.

Purchase and wear a Mustang Survival Suit. This suit is like a snowmobile suit with closed cell foam for warmth and floation with a behind the head pillow that can be water activated or manualy blown up.The pillow when full of air turns your body around so that your face is faceing up out of the water. This suit will add time to your chances of survival when you end up in very cold water, the water pressure around the suit pushes the closed cell foam core against your body keeping out a large amount of water. Most musky fishermen on the Niagara River own one of these suits and wear them in November & December when on the water.

Hey,

Any idea of the cost of this suit? How about where to buy them? Thanks

The Mustang Survival Suit is not cheap, somewhere around $375 at West Marine Stores. There are other brand name survival suits that are a little cheaper, but they do not have reflection tape, velcro sleave and anckle wraps to help hold out water, zip up legs and harness belt, some do not have behind the head floatation pillow as well. The Mustang Survival Suit is what the U.S. Coast Guard uses.

matt, great topic. just off the top of my head

1) survival blanket, cost less than $10,$20 for a two person important for hypothermia, and treating for shock in the event of some other serious accident.
2) this is not the time to be homophobic. your own body heat is the best way to raise the victims core body temp.

gotta go, game time
