Dieter and I just got back from the meeting this evening for the Leaser Lake Restoration Project. What an exciting and adventurous program they have planned. I don't mean to sound melodramatic, but they really are planniing some great stuff! I'm sure Dieter would express those sentiments as well. I'll let Dieter report the information with their project, but i just wanted to answer a few questions that I was asked to be relayed to them.

Leaser Lake is a 110 acre lake in Lehigh County. They plan to rebuild the dam, totally draining the existing lake and begin creating a new restored ecosystem. They will be creating commitees to help with all aspects of the restoration shortly. We both expressed our Club's willingness to be an active participant in this venture. The following is a "Projected Timetable"

1.5 yrs Design and Permitting ( starting in Jan.)
6 mos. Bid Process
1 yr. Construction
1 yr. Filling of the Lake ( 2010)
3 mos. Drain the Lake
11 mos. Completed water level

Any other questions can be answered by contacting their website:

Hey George,

Thanks to both you and Dieter for attending. It sounds like an ambitious plan. With that time table, there should be a fishable population of muskies about the time I'm ready to retire!!!! :- Seriously, it should be an interesting process to follow from start to end. Thanks again.

Hi Guys,

Thanks again for attending last month's meeting. George, I think you added an extra two steps in the time schedule that you posted! We're going to drain the lake BEFORE construction and expect that it will be refilled by Fall of 2010.

On December 13th we had a roundtable meeting with environmental officials from around the State. At this meeting, Mike Kaufmann the Regional Fisheries Manager stated that he would like to see a four year moratorium on fishing at the Lake after the project has been completed to allow the fish population to become well established. Although this would be a bitter pill for fishermen to swallow, it will result in an excellent fishery. At this time, Mike appears to be in favor of establishing a warm water fisheries at the lake. Target species would include Walleye, Bass, Black Crappie and MUSKIES. Most likely, the annual stocking of trout (Muskie food) <<<<><<< would also continue. Christian Berg from the Morning Call was at the meeting and wrote the following article about the fisheries proposal:

I hope that Muskies, Inc. Will continue their involvement in this exciting project. The next meeting of the Leaser Lake Heritage Foundation is on January 9th at 7pm in the Lynn Township Municipal Building.

Guys, thank you for attending the meeting. I am extremely excited about the Leaser project <<<<><<< .It is already a great fishing lake that has always been missunderstood and under utilized by fellow fisherman. I can wait for the musky, we know it will be worth it!

2014, huh?  My daughter will be 14 years old and I'll be, holy cr@p - alright, let's try this another way...

... anyway you slice it, that's what I'd call a long term project.

Some of you guys might want to talk to MI16 about how they supported the refilling of Tamarack Lake in 1998-2001.  Tamarack was a great numbers lake in NW PA that was completely drained for dam safety reasons.  They had to rebuild the lake fish population from scratch, and started seeing 30" fish in 2001.  It's cranking out low-40" fish now.  If I recall correctly, it was stocked with advanced fingerlings and some adults immediately after refilling.  MI16 put up some cash for golden shiners to provide a food supply.

So when Leaser reopens, you'll have a population of fish that have never suffered from predation during stocking, have never seen a lure, and should be in the low 30" range.  Sounds like something worth waiting for.  Maybe I'll even be living in PA by then.  It's only 35 minutes from my parents house.

Oh, and be ready for the "muskies eating all the trout/bass/dogs" people.  The lake was not stocked with muskies when it was refilled in 1991 due to a PFBC decision to not stock muskies and walleyes into new trout waters.  It sounds like Kaufmann is committed to a good warm/coolwater fishery first and put-and-take trout fishing second.  Make sure that he stays on that message.

I hope this works out.  I don't think I've ever actually seen the lake full.

Chris
