My name is Jason Tentler. I am currently a member of Muskies inc. here in Akron Ohio chapter 19. I am moving to the Harrisburg area on Thursday the 19th. If anyone needs someone to go muskie fishing just let me know. I really do not have alot of experiance on fishing rivers except the St. Lawrence, so this is pretty much all new to me. I am not looking for spots or secerets. Just a point in the right direction. I have a feeling that my boat is not going to be very well suited for fishing in this area. I have a 16 deep-v w/a 50 and 9.9 kicker. Will this be ok for the Susky? I did some reasearch and it seemed that the north branch was the place to be, but are there muskies south of harrisburg. I did check out little buffalo a month ago, and it seemed like a good numbers lake. My apartment is only 10 miles from there. When is your next meeting? I would really like to come out and join. If any one needs any info on fishing here in Ohio I would be very willing to help.
Thanks again,
Jason Tentler

As far as the rivers im pretty limited in knowledge since this is my first real year fishing them. I am learning every time I go out, but there are some very talented and skilled river fisherman in this club who I am sure will help you out. Please come to a meeting and I am sure you will learn a ton and I am sure some guys will respond to this post too.
Welcome to the area and hopefully Penn Jersey - Chapter 50 [&]]

Jason,
Welcome to the Burg Il ive about 45 min from Little Buffalo and try to get over there once in awhile. I spend most of my time on the river,Id be more then happy to get together and do some fishing. There are some great river fishermen in this club,I dont claim to be one of them but I love to chuck around those big chunks of wood we all call baits. You can always send me a PM when you get settled in and we'll get together.

Jason- I think that Tom Dietz is a member of chapter 19. He has a lot of experience with the Susky that I'm sure he would be willing to share. As far as the boat goes, well the Susky is pretty much a jet boat river with a couple of deeper pockets here and there that you could use your boat, but it would be very limited. I have a jet and will be looking to fish that stretch this fall. Keep me in mind.
We meet the first Wednesday of the month. Updates for meetings are on the home page. Hope to see you there. -Eric

Thanks to all of you. I will be in touch here in the near future. I will more than likely be fishing somewhere on friday. Do to moving my fishing in the last few months has been down, except for the last few days. I have managed to put myself and others on a bunch of fish here. That is how it goes I guess. I have noticed that most people are throwing warner cranks. Is there anywhere that I can pick these up or order them?

Jason,
A long-winded post, but....
I lived in Central PA until 2001 but now live in the desert of the SW USA. I fished all three branches of the river while I lived in PA and still try to hit it when I'm in PA visiting family.
There are muskies in the main branch of the Susquehanna from the MD line to the confluence, in the North branch from the confluence to NY, and in the West Branch at least up to Williamsport. I don't think any one section has substantially more fish than the other, but they are different rivers. The West Branch is usually very clear water with pool/riffle habitat, the North Branch is generally stained with pool/riffle habitat, and the part near Harrisburg is downright huge with shallow ledges and rocks all over the place. I get the impression that they move around alot, so even if they aren't stocked in a section, they may be there if the habitat is right. The jury is still out on natural reproduction in the river, but I've heard some stories that suggest it might be happening.
A deep-V is not the best choice for the river; if you spend much time there, you'll have a jet pretty quickly. You can still get around some of the deeper areas if you're really careful, and you should have no problems behind the power generation dams south of Harrisburg and the Fabridam near Sunbury. I do not hear of much muskie fishing in those pools, because most people concentrate on the free-flowing sections, but I'm sure there is a good population in them.
I think the trick to doing well on this (and any river) is to find and learn a few good spots really well and concentrate on those spots. For this reason, you are probably better off starting close to home where you can get more time on the water. You're welcome to burn gas, time, and energy hauling up to the North Branch, but long-term, you're probably better off closer to home.
Some other things to think about:
-the biggest fish I've seen in that river was in 3' of water with nothing deeper than 5' anywhere within a half mile. They can be anywhere, but....
-somebody told me once that "in a 10 mile stretch of river, most muskies come from only a few spots the size of my living room" and "don't overlook the shallow water". Find the right spots where depth, current, and food converge and and you are in business.
-if you're fishing crankbaits, you want tough lures with solid lips. I knocked the lips out of several cranks on those rocks until I learned this lesson. Warner cranks were designed and made for the river by a guy near Harrisburg, but I don't think he's selling them anymore.
Gotta go, apparently I have jobs to do around the house.

Chris,
Thanks for the advice. I am going to start fishing here tomorrow and tuesday. With moving there has not been allot of time for me to get out. I am going to check out the areas south of harrisburg today and possible a few other areas. I do have a 9.9 kicker on my boat so I may have to use that in the river. If any one needs a fishing partner let me know.
Jason
