I wanted to post an invitation to anyone interested in helping out with the article for the PFBC website. For those that aren't aware of what we're doing, we as a club have been invited to rewrite an article on the PFBC website regarding fishing for muskies with live bait. Now granted, fishing with live bait might not be your preferred way of fishing for muskies, however, it is legal and promoted by the State. Where we come in, is to hopefully encourage anglers considering to fish this way, ... a better more muskie friendlier way, ie, quick strike rigs. This is certainly "NOT" a live bait bashing session, but rather to encourage a better way to fish for muskies as well as hopefully getting anglers to consider using artificial baits instead.
At our last meeting, we did have a few guys interested in helping to put this together. I'll be contacting you all soon as to where and when we will be doing this. For anyone not at our last meeting, and interested in helping out , or submitting any suggestions regarding this article, your input would be welcomed!
The guys I have listed as wanting to help with this are, Musky Ed, Tim Roth, Tom Long and myself. I would like to get this article written as soon as possible, so this doesn't interfere with our club's agenda for the year. Thanks

I started on a first draft and read the old article. I also did a literature search to see what published info is out there. We could have a group meeting on Sunday to talk about this if you guys want, if that's what you meant Ed. The winter PFBC meeting is on Jan 27th, so obviously we will not have a draft ready by then.

I would say that if you guys want to meet this Sunday ( Jan. 31), that would be good for me as well. If you want we could have it at my place around 2:00pm. I still haven't heard from that guy from the State regarding this, kinda why I haven't said much. After talking with you guys, I think we should go ahead and rewrite this article, and then send it in anyway. What's the most that could happen. I have been checking out some articles as well, particularly from The Complete Guide To Muskie Fishing , written by Jim Saric and Steve Heiting. They have a real good chapter in there regarding Live Bait Fishing.
I think between all our heads coming together, we should be able to knock this out in an afternoon. If this time and place works for you guys,, let me know...
Tom Long, if you read this, please give me a call.

I finally reached Eric Levis from the PFBC, and discussed with him about the opportunity to rewrite this article, and he was very positive.
I suggested we as a club, rewrite this article, read it at our monthly meeting ( March), and then submit it to him. He would then read and make any corrections or deletions they felt necessary, and then e-mail us back with an updated article which would then be presented on the PFBC website.
So , there you go...

The part that I'm struggling with is how much to include on quick strike rigs? Also trying to write the section that discusses single hooks and muskies swallowing them. Some folks beleive the fish just digest them and it doesn't hurt the fish, but there are published reports showing otherwise, so those should be referenced in the article. In the mid west, quick strike rigs are used extensively for muskies, not so much in PA as far as I know. But, there is some good literature out there describing how to use them, so I think it's important we have that in the article. Maybe a couple of sentences saying....lures are the choice of most musky anglers because they work the best in most situations and here are the numbers of fish registered by Muskies Inc. members in PA on artificials and live baits...(I've asked International if it's ok to publish this informtion before doing so).
It's a work in progress, I'm sure you all understand this is a delicate subject...

I just heard from Jim Bunch with international, yes we can use the total registered fish by Muskies Inc. members caught on artificial vs. live bait in a PFBC article, as long as the information is properly referenced. I think we should include both Chapter 50 and Three Rivers Chapter in the data base, yes? I want to include all fish registered by members of a PA musky club, and mention that a certain percentage were not caught in PA. Just fyi, less than 0.1% of the muskies registered by both clubs were on live bait.

I as well as most members of this club would certainly agree with you, but the whole idea for this article is Live Bait Fishing For Muskies. I think everyone would agree with you about those numbers regarding artificial vs live bait, but the fact still remains, live bait is legal and encouraged by the State. I think it's certainly our job to educate the public about alternative methods, but I do feel we really do need to present this subject in a very unbiased opinion. I think we're getting our shot to make a difference, and we really should strive to be as fair as possible. Even after we put together this article, it still will be subject to any changes that they feel necessary.
My whole idea behind, even bringing this up again, was that damn picture of that minnow hooked thru the lip, like you were going for bass, and being backed by the PFBC. I know it's an old article, but felt we were given a real opportunity to make a difference in our community regarding muskie fishing.
I'm sure there are negatives , even using suckers, but we have to remain focused in this subject.

i know it is a little late to post this, but someone once said better late then never, besides someone new to musky fishing might go back and read all the old posts(like i did) and learn something(like i did). so here is my 2 cents, i fished with live bait alot and although i just started fishing for muskies (sept. and oct. last year, middle of april till now this year), i never targeted them with it until this year. many years ago, my friend and i were were fishing lake hopatcong for hybrid stripers, and or bass with live bait and my friend hooked into a 19lb. 39" musky (which at the time was as big as they would have been considering how long they had been in there),picture available not included, there was no way the fish would live another day.my friend waited too long to check his line and the fish swallowed the hook and was a bloody mess. it broke my heart to see such an awesome creature meet its end that way,(because im a die hard catch and release, animal lover, tree hugger).my friend knew i would have done everything short of beating the crap out of him to get him to put it back in the water, but because it was bleeding and he knew that i knew it was as good as dead there was nothing i could say.he mounted it (legal limit at time was 36"). that never discouraged me from using live bait. i use it with 8lb. and 10lb. mono quick strike rigs no leaders of any kind and have caught close to 10 fish this year (6 over 34") pictures avail. not incl. i dont use it every time i go fishing, maybe 1 in every 5 to 8 trips, but 8 out of 10 times i use it i catch fish, compared to 3 fish (20lb,10-12lb,6-8lb) out of 30 -50 trips useing lures(all fish {live bait and lured} caught and released unharmed,physically... mentally?lol).
however after reading a post (on this website, paraphrased), that if you catch a big fish on light tackle it is very possible that you would have to exhaust the fish so much to land it , even if it swam away it probably WOULD NOT survive. whether that is true or not i dont know, but it seems to make sense, especially in hot weather.that is unacceptable to me,true or not, so from now on i will use live bait less often, yes i said less often not never again.
does live bait work yes
does live bait take alot of the sport out of musky fishing yes
can you use live bait and not injure fish, if done right
do i think you catch bigger fish with live bait or lures lures my opinion
the point im trying to make (i know finally right) is EDUCATE EDUCATE and EDUCATE and hope they give back more then they take
