Unfortunately it seems like it was a legal fish.. Its a shame :'( People just don't understand what it takes for them to get to this size. We just need to keep educating the public. I guess that’s all we can do. I don't personally recognize the boat.
Thanks,

Fact of the matter is, we can only educate. This guy is either looking forward to a Muskie dinner (they taste very good according to a lot of books I've read) or to mounting his "trophy" 32 inch fish.
We've had a big part in changing our PA limit to 40" (that fish on the stringer would have had another 2-3 years of educatin' under his belt). We're in the process of making posters, we've stocked our own fish and we'll let the world know about the wonderful resource they have in the trophy Muskie fishery that we're helping to build in PA and NJ. Until the law reads (good luck with this one) that a person can't legally take a Muskie, there are going to be people who, rightfully, will.
Our energy needs to be spent on the positive. If someone knows this guy, bring him into the light.

Given it is Halloween, lets stir the pot >:D >:D >:D
At what point do we become elitists!!!! You know, the tree huggers and Sierra club types.
The guy caught a musky. It was legal(lets assume).
By the look of thing he was fishing in miserable conditions so lets assume he is a dedicated fisherman. Pehaps the fish died. Rather than throw it into the lake for turtle food, he kept it was assuming he bought a license, which was his legal right.
How many of us have caught fish that we thought may not make it. Yet we let them go. Bleeding, injured..... Perhaps this fish died at the boat and he kept it.
If we are totally concerned about the fish, let stop using baits with 2 or 3 massive trebles, pinch all barbs(which in Cananda is mandatory for many lakes), and not take a fish from the water for a picture.
This is a brutal sport and some fish may, NO, will get hurt and die. I am sure a guy who went out of state, and is set up as he is, knows what he is doing. In fact, by looking at it, he seems to be quite a fisherman, given the jet yet set up for trolling.
Understand all the facts before we accuse.
And most of all, get out and fish rather than look at guys out there and accuse them of "being un-educated" when they get a fish and don't handle like some of you would like.
I have never kept a muskie nor will, but I guarantee I have hurt a few. Most of the guys in this club who have caught a number of fish have too I guarantee it.
Muskies are fish, not people. If some people leagally decide to keep a fish for whatever reason that is their right.
There is nothing worse we can do than become a bunch of elitists regarding these fish, especially if we want to improve the fishery in our area.

Well said Greg. I had an ex PSU LB out with on Mercer and he set the hook so hard on a fish it ripped the gill plate out while we were trolling. It was legal size, we let the fish go, but I bet it was probably one of the dead fish seen at Mercer during the summer of 2004. So yes, we can not rush to judgement. Anyway, I think what hurts the most are the following - it was PA fisherman in NJ waters (I am sure that will rub the MI22 members as well as NJ in essence pays for their own fish), the cat clearly was an experienced fisherman based on the boat set up and lastly he was dragging the fish around the back (could have been discrete as well as his terse response to Gordon when approached). I think I have seen this guy up north on rte 31 at the the bait shop before Washington (I am sure he is a regular river fisherman as well).
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

All of Gregs points are good. And i have to say the points Joe has made are most likely what bothers me most. The pa guy killing a muskie in new jersey water. That tweeks me.Yes,that tweeks me.It feels like one of our guys has gone up there to fish for muskies and is killing them.Maybe i put the post up to try and save face with our brothers up north.Try and let them know it wasn't one of our guys.I dont know. But education is the key.And as D said thats were we come in.Why is he dragging it beind his boat on a stringer though??If i had a muskie die on me i would NOT drag it around the lake for others to see.Its hard to believe that boat doesn't have a livewell on it.It still tweeks me! >:( Bob

Guys, as I posted on our board the fact that those individuals were from PA was not the issue. It's what they did. Even giving them the benefit of the doubt that the fish was mortally injured , it was bad form to drag it around for the next un-educated or un- interested guy to see. Plus I'm the one who spoke with them and their demeanor convinced me from the get go that the fish was killed because of it's size ( Moby Dick) to them. I never questioned the legality but my thoughts are this: It's the year 2006, we live in the NY metropolitan area and if every guy kept every legal fish possible then our lakes would be sterile. I knew the pics and post would end up on your board and my hopes were that one of you guys might someday talk some sense into those characters on the off- chance you might meet. Regards, Gordon.
