Any possibility that the DNR would/could offer a stamp for Muskie just as they do with the trout stamps, or is this too far fetched of a possibility for PA? I think it would be a great revenue boost for the stocking program and fishery and if it was a requirement to keep a fish, would cull people accidentally catching and keeping fish by a sizeable amount.

I heard this topic discussed for other states on other sites. In my opinion, a stamp works more for a put and take fishery, like with trout, a big revenue source for PFBC. Muskies raise money more through the money people spend to travel to where they are and fish for them. To my knowledge PA is not talking about a musky stamp, could be wrong though. PFBC is commited to having trophy musky waters, that's good, but it's more through working with clubs like ours, have good stocking programs, research, education, raising size limits...just my thoughts. I'm old enough to remember the Ontario Muskie Stamp. As I recall the administrative costs exceded the income. A solid program to look at is the new Michigan tag set up. 🙂 Does not help with the cost of stocking but does impact harvest.
interesting viewpoint on it. I could see that happening. I would like the tag setup as an option as well. I think the majority of fish that are kept are incidentals and this would cut back on it quite a bit IMO.

I'm not convinced the majority of kept muskies are the incidental catches. I do think a majority of dedicated musky guys think everyone follows the C&R beliefs but recent history [ Buffalo Harbor,Green Bay ,Wabigoon and Lac Seul ] suggest that might not be true. Size surveys support the conclusion that most fish will be under whatever the legal maximum is for the body of water studied. At least in the Midwest and Western Ontario.
Despite the great replicas now available quite a few guys still want a skin mount 50+ on the wall. Quite surprising the number of 50's mounted by taxidermists in the Detroit Lakes area of Minnesota. Heck ,one younger guy with a lake cottage has FOUR skinmounts over 50 on his wall.

I recall that NY used to have a stamp program on Chatauqua about 20 years ago. You were allowed to harvest something like 5 or 7 fish a year. I don't know why they got rid of it, but I'm guessing that it cost a bunch to manage and didn't impact harvest much.
Be careful what you wish for. The state might get this brilliant idea to fund the muskie stocking program through stamp fees. I don't know the numbers, but it is relatively expensive, and relatively few anglers target muskies. That could be a $100+ stamp. Not that serious muskie guys wouldn't pay it, but that would make it more elitist than it already is.
We have talked about a stamp out here in NM, and it is almost certainly not going to happen. The state wants to make the tiger muskie fishery accessible to all, and a stamp is contrary to that objective. Instead, people are free to come abuse the tigers, kill a few by accident, and then go home thinking they had a good day.
Besides, most state agencies are not looking for more to do.
