Hi all

As many of you know we were awarded a $1,050.00 grant from the state for the purchase of a stocking bladder to help with our stocking efforts. We are to match the funds provided by the state with club funds.

The clubs board is looking for a member or members to take the lead on this, working with me, for this purchase.

MI50 Members,

We need to make a decision and move forward on ordering the stocking bladder that we investigated over a year ago. After speaking with the manufacturer that gave us our original quote, he is willing to honor the original price that we were given for a 4'x4'x2' bladder. I believe we need a few questions answered before we move forward. I don't own a truck, so I don't know what the load capacities might be.

Is a 4'x4'x2' (240gal @ ~2000lb) bladder large enough???

Could we go with a slightly larger bladder 4'x5' (300gal @ ~2500lb) - Cost would only be $100 more.

The weights listed above are for the water only and filled to maximum capacity. Realistically, we would not have 24" of water during transport.

The manufacturer has recommended that we install our own aeration system to save some cost. (I agree)

His turnaround time now is approximately one week.

We would like your thoughts so we can move forward with this before the grant is revoked.

I would think the first question, that needs to be answered, is: Who has a vehicle that could safely transport the bladder?; second: Who has the space to store it?
When those two questions are answered, we can then move on to which of the two we should get. If we are going to use it to transfer the fish from Cabela's tank to their new home, I would vote for the bigger one as the fish will be larger. If we are simply using it to move fry from the hatchery to Cabela's, or directly to stocking sites, then the smaller one should be fine.
I do question whether or not it is wise to install the aerator ourselves. Not knowing much about these bladders, I would think that having the system delivered complete would eliminate any chance of incompatibility between the bladder and the aerator. Just my opinion.
Anyway, thanks for looking into this and hopefully we can come to a concensus on these issues.

Just to clarify, the purpose of having this bladder would be to stock/move advanced size muskies from one location to another. The State will always deliver fry/fingerling size fish to any of our Co-Op locations. It is then MI50's responsibility to move them after that. An example would be: State delivers fingerlings to Cabela's then we stock/distribute as needed. It would also give us flexibility when we purchase fish in the fall. Typically, they do not like to make multiple deliveries to different bodies of water. With the extra bladder, we could meet the truck and then distribute from there. Ultimately, I believe this should eventually be mounted to a small trailer, but that is for another discussion.

The bladder manufacturer did state that he would install an aeration system if we would supply it. Again, that would be an additional cost.

I did the math. ..nobody listened. Another issue no one paid attention to..... I'm not into looking like dopes. Weight is high. 350 truck or better, we're into double axel trailer or better, bare min doesn't cut it here. Or screw it, let's get popped for weight and blow the budget on fines.....half ass is good enough right?

Now Tom, don't be going all "Mike D" on us 😉 Notice the wink buddy. I think the feedback is saying that we need to do more research before we spend the money on the bladder. When do we anticipate needing this bladder and tariler nad how many times a year? Maybe we could rent a u-haul truck a few times a year.

most modern 150/1500 trucks can haul 2000lb in their bed. I would be willing to assist given enough notice. Storage of it would be a problem for me however.

1600 lbs is max on 150's, that's only 200 gallons of water or 4×3×2.3 feet. Plus the weight of the bladder itself, plus tanks etc. Just trying to come up with a good solution so this doesn't become dependant on one guy and one vehicle. I have access to two trailers that are more than capable of handling the weight, would probably just need to get electronic break controller installed on my truck. Do we have any solid specs on this thing yet? Weights, volumes?

I just don'twanna see anyone doing the village idiot, hauling 4000 lbs in a 150, getting pulled over or crashing because of gross overweight .

The new f-150 even with full tow package can't do enough in it's bed for the bladder. Like peacock said, bladder is awesome idea but we'd have to have a big truck available for sure to carry weight.

I'm shocked at some of these comments, wow. This topic has come up at several meetings, I asked for volunteers to run with this to help with the research. I then asked Greg to take point on putting together a work group to discuss this, George was the only one to raise his hand to help. We looped Kevin as we worked together on the initial grant. Kevin took the ball and called the manufacture to ensure they would still honor our pricing, turnaround time, etc. Kevin is presenting his findings to the membership for input.

We don’t have all the answers, this is a step towards enhancing our expanding stocking efforts. Perhaps next year we apply for money for a trailer, storage, oxygen, etc. Right now we’ve been awarded money for the bladder, something we didn’t have when we applied for this grant.

These are all valid points and I appreciate some of the feedback. We need to work thru some of these items quickly. Storage being in my opinion high on the list. We could look into renting space, would Cabelas let us use space? Who wants to run with this portion and research ideas?

Transportation. Agree with the comments on what types of vehicles can safely transport this bladder. A trailer seems to be the preference and I think it would be easiest when needing to access the bladder. Sounds like we have options within the club for a trailer. I may also have access to one. If not, we try for another grant to buy a trailer or budget for one next week and we don’t use the bladder till then. Baby steps.

Any other concerns that we’re missing?
