Since this is such a big part of Muskies, Inc., I thought this might be the appropriate area to post this. Yesterday evening, 4 Jul 05, I took my neighbors granddaughter fishing on my little lake in the back yard, Lake Loretta. It's not a Musky lake, so we weren't fishing for those. But it does have largemouth bass, perch, crappie, bluegill, sunfish, and I think rock bass. Anyway, in an hour and a half Shelby, age 10, caught 6 nice sized bluegills and a 12" largemouth bass! We released all the fish since we weren't keeping them for a meal. I caught 2 largemouth in the 12" range. Shelby had a very good time and was really happy about her bass catch. She was using a light action rig with a float and worms. Maybe when she gets older I can take her Musky fishing. I don't think she'd have the patience for it right now. This should be a subject matter our club reports on. It's a lot of fun to watch a youngster pull in a fish. 😀

Hey,

In this vein, I too got a kid out fishing this weekend. My youngest daughter Chelsea agreed to go trudging the creeks of Potter County with her old man on Saturday. It was a great day to be out and it felt good to take her, show her some of the finesse needed for trout fishing and to put her on some decent fish. Who knows, perhaps I've got my own future musky fishing partner!!!!

I took an 8yr. old boy bass fishing. Hasn't seen his dad or fished for two years since his parents divorced.

I hooked the first three fish and gave him the rod to play the fish. After watching how I worked the lizards he picked it up and caught 7 more bass on his own. Two of the bass I wasn't sure he would bring to the boat. They gave him all he could handle but he did it.

I showed him how to pick them up because he wanted to release them himself. We caught 11 bass in 2 hours. He had allstar little league practice so we had to trailer the boat and leave. Could've been a 30 fish day.

But we were able to find the right color in that assortment to make that young boy's summer, "the best ever!"

I took another neighborhood young guy out fishing. This 12 yr. old fishes with me a few times a year, whenever I am in his area.

I gave him a choice between going to the lake I did so well on the day before for Lg.mouth or trying the river for musky where he caught one last year. He chose the river.

I make sure that these young guys help in loading and hooking up the boat so they experience how much work is involved.

We started 11am and fished until 9:30pm, non stop. We trolled, jigged, drifted, anchored, threw every combination of lure (most lures where larger than the fish that people catch). And then we did this over and over again. We did every thing but use live bait or dynamite. Never saw a fish let alone catch one.

We returned home and I invited him in for chops on a stick. I take left over pork chops and insert a popsickle stick. It's a kid thing.

Recounting the day we laughed so hard and both our wrists and forearms were aching because of the size or the rods and the lures.

Some where on my summer calender I promised him a trip down by the ocean, quite a thought for a kid who has grown up in a mountainous area.

I just hope catching fish in the bay, where something is always biting, doesn't spoil his enjoyment of fishing in the river or lakes of upstate Pa.

Good job. Even if you don't catch anything, getting out on the water is the big thing. I'm so swamped with our upcoming parish festival, I haven't had time to hit the water. I'm lucky to cast off my dock! But to take out a kid, and now to salt water, he'll love that! Keep up the good work. Pork on a stick, huh? And I thought steak on a stake was a novel concept!!! 8)
