Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the excitement of Musky fishing, and would like to know your favorite "Must Have" lures for a first -timer. Right now I have a White Bucktail, Black Bucktail and Yellow Daredevil Spoon, and that's about it. I plan to get out for some Musky hunts next year, and would like to have some basic lures. I've caught a couple of Muskies this past year with those Bucktails, but don't want to get into that habit. I received a gift certificate from Cabelas for Christmas, and thought what better way to get started. Any and all opinions welcomed.

Thanks again,
George

If I had three choices (excluding bucktails) I'd have to say a bulldawg, manta, and a grandma. Cabelas only carries the grandmas. They may only be available at the Hamburg store and not on line as well. They also sell belivers and suicks which are a good staple baits.

They other lures I mentioned can be bought from stores like: http://www.protacklemuskyshop.com or http://www.muskyshop.com These places are loaded with gret baits that are difficult to find locally. Hope this helps. -Eric

George, It's a well known fact in the club that my favorite is the Reef Hawg, preferably in black or silver, and 6" or 8" long. My 2nd choice is probably the Suick, same colors and sizes. Be aware that I'm very much "old school" and don't try a whole lot of the new stuff. I prefer to dance with the one that brung me. Among the newer stuff, you can't go wrong with the Manta or Bulldog, All of these are jerk/glide baits and pretty easy to use. Mix these up with your spinners and you have a good mix. It's hard to find good selection of Muskie lures locally. I suggest you try some of the mailorder outlets, some of whom sponser the club website. There is a whole lot of options out there. You can spend a lot of money. Be selective. I've got a whole lot of lures, but you find me on the water and you'll find me with one of those mentioned on the end of my line. Lots-of-luck!

Reef hogs are nice but i think it takes some time to gain confidence in how the work.Mantas are easy to work and look good from the start.I think big game puts out a 5" twitch bait.Easy to work and not to big to make you question its size.I remember when i first started i thought depth raiders were huge.Don't be afraid to stick with the bucktails. There are some guys that throw nothing else and do very well. Also,The Warner baits would be perfect for you.The smaller sized bait is 6"{i think?},looks great, last long, easy to work, not real expensive and CATCHES FISH.Bob

I agree with all of the mentioned choices, and will add the 8" Bobbie jerkbait to the mix (6" doesn't run well, 9" is a bear to throw all day). Cabelas carries a 6" Lucky Strike crankbait for a good price, but the Warners, Wileys, Leos, and others are better and more expensive (most of those are tough to find at a decent price).

The Rapala Super Shad Rap gets some good press and are easy to get, but I've never used one. I suspect that they catch fish as well as any other shad-style crankbait once you get it in front of a fish.

DO NOT buy: plastic Pikies (any of them made in the last 20 years), Burmeks, Pigs, plastic Cisco Kids.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions!  I'm assuming that all those lures ( Manta, Reffhawg, etc.) are jerk baits.  I haven't fished jerkbaits too much in the past.  How would you fish them?  Similiar to Zara Puppys?  Cast, wait, give a twitch toward you , stop , and repeat.  Would these be fished the same way , or more like a crankbait?  Thanks again for all your help.
