hey guys,
I know this is a NY lake, but figured someone may have had some experience fishing this lake and may be able to offer some insight. I am looking to head up at the end of this month. I have heard good things about this place and it is only about a 4 1/2hr ride for me. I am not a big fan of trolling and would like to stick with casting if at all possible. My understanding is that the lake is very shallow and weedy on the southern end. Will the weeds be tapering off by this point in the season, and if so would anyone have suggestions on where I may want to head on the lake? Thank you in advance,
Lenny

I know it real well..... Best place for casting is north basin around the mayville flats. There are also a few coves I. The same area on the west and east side of the lake that offer good casting opportunities. The south end looks shallow on maps, but that's deceiving. I was down there in June, and was in 10-20 foot the whole time. Lots of walleye on south basin. It really is a trolling lake, but you can cast. Look up Larry jones. He guides there. He gives specific fishing reports on his site. Most of the guides fish the north basin......better size fish. Lots of sub legals on south end.

Side note.....if your traveling that far, I'd recommend going just a little further to Detroit. I was camping up in NY last year when 2 guys pulled in beside me from Ohio. They always wanted to try Chautaqua. They fished st. Clair 5 days before they made the trip to ny. They fished chautaqua 1 day and went back to st. Clair where they were boating an average of 10-15 fish a day. The fishery isn't even comparable. Chautauqua might be good for 1 or 2 fish a day on average.....if your lucky. The smaller lakes close to there are better (bear lake/cassadega)

Chautaqua is roughly 4.5hrs, where St. Clair is another solid 4hrs. Ideally I would be making the trip to LSC this fall, but Chautaqua is my compromise as I will not be able to get an extended weekend to go before the season ends. I just have too much work related stuff going on between now and then.
