finally got out

Hey all, been awhile since I've posted. I finally got out this year to do some run and gun fishing. Me and my buddy went with the super spooks (bass color)and scored on our second round at the bottom of a big pool where I seen no action last year at all. He caught a 46" pure beautiful fat fish. Got a few good snap shots and then a lively release. Moral of the story is that 3 of the 5 fish we caught last year and the 1 this year all had the same method of devouring the lure. In this case I was on the bubble or just fishing through the area first and the guy with me wasabout 20-25 yards back doing the same exact walk the dog and lure and the point is.. the musky took his, I am assuming that the first lure that comes through must get the fishes attention and then the next one that comes through it strikes. Does anyone agree with that theory? Or has it just been a coincidence? Ofcourse I am off to round 2 tonight at six.

Just to add to this theory, last night there were 4 of us working a 1/4 mile stretch, the first guy usuing only a spook and the next 3 using super spooks. The only strike we had was with the 4th guy and all lures came across the same area atleast once per person or 3 X's before he got there.

duber8,

I think I agree with this theory. I've seen several fish caught after casting back into the same spot. The thing I'm not sure of is why ???, and this is one of the mysterious things about muskies. Whether there was a musky there on the first 1 or 2 or 10 presentations and all of a sudden decided to take the bait....or, maybe a musky just happen to come into that spot at the last minute and hit the bait. Who knows, all I know is that good spots are good spots, and the muskies will be there sooner or later. I've anchored down and stayed at one spot for hours, just pounding away and caught a musky. This is the opposite of the run-and-gun approach, but I like to spend a little more time in a good spot and change it up a little before moving on.

Congrats to your buddy on a 46 incher, that's a huge fish! Fish On!

If you have ever had a muskie in a fish tank, And watched him after you put in a few minnows , The patience these fish have after the minnows swim by his face two ,three ,four times , and on the fifth pass BAMM, Who knows why ?
Its kind of like driving down the road passing Mcdonalds , Then Wendies, then Ritas water ice on a hot summer day BAM!!!

Yes, that is kind of weird for a fish, totally puts a stick in my run and gun theory. that is probably why the musky is the fish that we all are after. They are like the NE coyote to the hunter or just me (elusive). Anyhow, looks like I am off to the races this year, I have already made plans on moving a little more north into conklin/kirkwood and a little more east toward windsor to further my quest. That picture on the front page does not have the distinct solid stripes as the tiger. This 46" had some solid spots and almost looked like a tiger but I am about 95% sure it was a pure. I was told in here that the tigers are stocked in NY, and that is where I am headed, would love to land one of them. Just to add to the questions.... on average, not considering stunted or food resources.... how big does a musky grow per year. I know I studied or caught walleye that were stocked and they averaged 3-4" per year.. 5" in one case. And to Mr. Musky... only got to ask me once for a drink...lol

Went out last night on about a mile hike on the river bank. about half way through I was walking behind my cousin throwing the same lure and about a 30" missed and came totally out of the water within 5 second he (assuming the same fish) was 25 feet ahead going after the other lure, very hungry fish. He felt the hooks and did not bite again. Had two other hits through out the night but they were probably smallies. I think there is something about this delayed biting theory, We worked the holes very slow and lots of casts.

Had to come back in and check out the replies. Anyhow, I finally got my first of the year - 46.5" pure - (resleased) Doesn't look like to many people are interested in my theories/stories. Your club sounds like it really does alot for the musky population and alot for kids I wish it luck. I will not bug you all again, sorry to be a talk alot.. peace out

Duber,

The site has been down since you last post and just came back up yesterday. I would give it a little more time for people to respond. Also it would help to come to a meeting/tournament and introduce yourself. People seems much more open/talkative to fimiliar faces...just my 2 cents..

I replied but it was lost our site has been getting repaired I was confused by one thing you said about a fish over 48" . I find alot of times fish eat on the pause . I hope you keep posting its nice to read and hope to see you at a meeting or club outing . I like to run and gun keep moving and find fish and new spots . If I find a big fish I will work it as part of my rotation .Tom

Fish over 48"---- That was basically my goal last year. 40" was the biggest. This year I didn't raise that 48" goal. The fish I missed on saturday was, I thought, close to 5', so I thought. The wake and splash he gave, If I didn't see the colors, I would have swore it was a beaver, scared me sober to say the least. Then I got him sunday night and that was the 46.5". I wrote a PM to sebskie and I am pretty sure it was lost. Anyhow, I am not leaving the site just trying to find my own answer with the huge amount of time I've been putting on the water the last couple weeks. Seems like the second guy down the path has been 100% effective this year - 7 hits two catches all being .. not the first one through. As far as making it to a meeting - doesn't look good, I basically have to beg or make some ridiculous trade to get the time on the water, don't think a trip to NJ will be buyable on my part. To be a member with this situation would probably not benifit your organization at all. I would and will donate to the cause because of the work you do for the Musky population and what you do for the kids that is always a great thing. The main thing is.. I like to share the stories I experience and that has actually got me into a little bind here local. Seems like the wrong couple fellas got ahold of the pics of the fish we got and now they are Musky bound, I am sure they don't have the intent on the release either, which may get myself into a little situation later down the line. Oh one more thing, I am pretty sure the fish I caught was the same fish we caught last year, grew 6.5" in a little less than one year. So anyway another long drawn out post from me.. I'll keep reading and maybe a small reply here and there.

Well, I want to correct my suggestion before.. implying that the muskies just happened to move into the spot and take the bait....no! they are there. As I confirmed this at the marsh tourney, muskies are there where your casting sometimes and just decide to ignor the presentation...those basterds!~ ;D They will hit when they are good and ready, just have to trigger them at the right time.

Duber, as far as people not responding to your posts...well, how's this, I've responed to myself at least 3 times on the same topic with no responses..whatever, I figured others just didn't feel like writing in at the time....who cares.... ;D Keep on sharing any musky info. you want, and WOW that sounds like a big fish you caught, congrats! ...fish on!

Being a member doesn't mean you have to be active we would like active support but not all time tables are the same . Being a member will open up the chitchat section and our fishing report section . The open internet is not safe from the meat hunters . I welcome anyone but feel that joining us is a way you can support us event if not active in the events

I do agree with the fish are there and believe they have a pattern to their feeding too, well in the river anyway, I am pretty sure they move into faster waters (head or tail of the pools) to feed. My cousin finally caught his first one this morning 42.5" (released). That was in a last years located spot. This year we have 3 more active fish and one that only showed himself once. well hey, looks like I didn't go anywhere. This joining the club thing..... I will look into it a little more tomorrow, running late for work right now, got into the suace a little to much last night.

Yes, everything was caught on top water, basically the bass colored super spook. The one in the water was caught with either a storm raider or a stomper, not much difference in the two. As far as last sundays journey.. It was a good boat ride, The other two guys took a good boat ride saturday as well. No action. This hot weather may have turned them off a little.

Hey all, got a question if anyone is still reading these posts. Top water has been a blast, but now it seems that alot of people are around and fishing all with the same baits. What would be a good bait other than an inline spinner? And how about a different top water bait that makes a wicked racket on the retrieve, The stomper or raider bring out the fish but the hook size would make me have to gear up a notch. Tomorrow is going to be a good day, been a couple weeks since I've been on the water for the fresh water shark and I am going nuts, probably won't sleep.

No I haven't really tried anything other than the super spook and I have fished with guys that used the storm raider. Do you have any pics of this "pacemaker". I will also check online for some info. Thanks. Went out for a little over 4 hours yesterday morning, the river was like a sheet of glass, and unfortuneatly it stayed that was, no action at all, fished about a mile stretch up and back slow.

Not sure what shop you are calling, but I am pretty sure Smokey's is still underwater from the flooding out midwest.. Rollies and Helens have them and you can order them online...here is the link http://www.muskyshop.com/modul.....Pacemaker8

Hope that helps.

No problem with the info. When your checking them out make sure to look at the smaller size (I forget the length) in black. Boy-o-boy is that a great lure. Later on

I tell you what... that is a great selection on that page, thanks. I think I found my new gander mountain. Its almost like christmas. Its a good time to gear up for fall fishing, right now seems like the spring bite is over and the summer one forgot to show up for musky. I will probably lean toward the large mouth right now. Thanks again
