First time Muskie fishing

Hello, My name is Frank and I'm new to the board. I've been a big time bass fisherman for some 15 years and would like to try my hand at Muskie fishing. I live on Long Island and don't want to drive to far for my first experience. Can anyone direct me to someplace to go within two and a half hours or so from where I live. The size of the fish is not important, the thrill of catching is what counts. I own a small 10 foot basshunter style boat with a trolling motor so small lakes under 300 acres work well for the boat. Thank you in advance.
Frank

Frank, as with our other first timers, we suggest that you sign up for our fall muskie school. Information is available on this website. It is a one on one teaching session where you are taught proper techniques of catching and more importantly, releasing. Muskie are a lot harder to handle than bass (you can't lip a muskie) and you should learn how to release a fish before all else.

We may only see what we look for.

Frank,

From where you are, I would suggest that you contact our bretheren at Chapter 22. They do their best work in the Northern New Jersey area and might be a bit more help in finding waters close enough to you.

Yes I indicated Chapter 22 when I sent my application in this morning. Both Chapter 22 and Chapter 50 have been very helpful. I am ready to put time on the water and try to catch my first muskie. I love the Delaware Water Gap area and will probably put in some time there as well as Echo Lake. Thanks again guys.

I would think safely handling and releasing these fish would be a major priority,I'm surprised not to see a thread specifically on that topic! This is my first time viewing the site so i may not have noticed it yet.
