This trip has been 2 years in the making. though different circumstances we were not able to go in the past. Finally the stars aligned and we were on our way. All of 3 of had obligations on saturday that prevented us from leaving early. So after work around 1am we hooked the boat up and got started on our long haul to LSC.

Fast forward to 2pm on sunday and we were on the ferry across to harsen's island.

First of all, this lake is very intimidating. Miles and miles of open water. Our only saving grace was that a few members had given me some pointers on what to look for/locations to head. The first day however was not terribly productive. We didn't start moving fish until late in the evening and only ended up with a mid 30'' pike to show for our efforts. Regardless it felt good not to blank on the first day. We decided to call it and get ready for day 2. We were going out with Captain Matt Firstien of Whopper Stopper Muskie Charters. (which i won at our annual auction.) We knew it was going to be a good day.

Day 2 we met with Matt at 730am. The first spot he took us to we moved a fish, as well as the second spot. We moved a dozen fish before noon, but not one of them were motivated in any way. They just came up for a look. Regardless, we were seeing fish. Several hours pass with only one shot at an actual hookup. I had a mid 40'' fish short strike my bulldawg. Then, around 4pm it happened. I had been chucking big rubber all day long, and matt made a comment to me about how that particular color/bait has been a great producer for him and I am making a liar out of him. haha. I told him that I would just keep chucking until they bite. On the very next cast I hook into a tank of a fish. As soon as Matt sees it he knows it is a big fish. We landed what was to be my personal best, by a long shot and the big fish of the trip. A 53'' beast.

After a few minutes in the tank she was on her way back. We had just got ourselves back together and started throwing again and my brother had a follow. He could see that the fish was hot and speeded up his retrieve. The fish crushed his bait and a few minutes later fish number 2 was in the boat. This was my brothers first muskie ever, and after this trip I'm sure not his last. He did an awesome job for his first time muskie fishing.

Not long after this I hooked up with another fish.....

We fished a while longer, but nothing was doing. Matt was willing to stay out as long as we wanted, but my dad was starting to get tired out from the long day and rather than drag him along we decided to call it a day and get out after them tomorrow. The following day the winds picked up and we ended up with some large waves in the 4' range on the main lake. This kept us in the channels and we didn't do much of anything the entire day.

Wednesday was to be our last full day, and the weather from tuesday carried over for the first half of the day. we stuck it out in the channels and moved some fish, but had nothing in the net to show for our efforts. As the evening came it mellowed out a bit and we headed out to the main lake. we worked hard all day and right
before sunset we tagged 2.

Thursday we decided to get out for a little bit before we headed home. We were all pulling for pops to get a fish as he had some close calls but nothing to show for all of his efforts. It was 12;45 and I told the guys we had time for one more pass. With the clock in stoppage time Dad hooks one on a boatside figure 8.

A perfect ending to the trip. Everyone boated a fish, my brother caught his first muskie, and my Dad and I caught our PBs. We will be back. Hopefully this fall.
I would like to say that if you have any plans on heading to LSC for the first time, get a guide.... More importantly hire Matt from Whopper Stopper. He was an awesome guide, very personable, entertaining, knowledgeable and put us on fish to boot. I Def recommend him.

Dude, that's an awesome report! Looks like you guys had a blast! Congrats to all you guys with a fish and especially you and your dad with your personal bests. That 53' was a P I G... Awesome! Way to go guys! Major Congrats and thanks for the pictorial trip...I love it!
Side Note...I love the way you took us on a pictorial trip, and have inspired me to do the same on my trips later this
summer and fall. Thanks
Sometimes you've got to "jiggle' it, and sometimes you've got to give it one big

Hugh Congrats Lenny and to your Dad, and Brother. Just a great report. Lots of personal bests and an absolute Pig for you! Looks like Matt put you on the fish and great to hear since this was an auction donation from him, couldn't have made for a more perfect PB! Good to hear you all had such a great time and a great trip.
Congrats...Silvia

Thanks everyone! I have to say that it was much more difficult to find fish on the lake than most make it seem. When I originally planned the trip I thought that it would be an "easy" lake to find/produce fish, but true to muskie fishing there is no magic lure/location. We worked for these fish, no doubt about it.
Larry,
Booking the day with Matt was by far the best decision of the trip. He not only put us on fish but made the whole experience enjoyable and gave us the confidence we needed to be productive the next couple days. We are already looking at booking another trip with him in the fall. I want to see one of those monsters with a feed bag on it!
I have some GoPro video of the 53" as well as my brother's fish that I will upload in the next few days. It was really cool how the whole catch transpired.
Thanks again everyone!

Lenny,
Sounds like a good trip, and a big fish to top it off.
Just curious - how far did you wander from Hansen's Island? Did you hang around there, or take the run to the Dumping Ground and the other well-known spots on the Canada side?
When I took a day out and fished LSC on a business trip from a rental boat, I was restricted to near-shore in Anchor Bay. Pretty boring flat structure over there.

Lenny,
Congrats on a great trip for all and you and your Dad's PB's. The fish look healthy and wide! Was that pike, the first day, an oddity or were there others seen/caught? It certainly makes one reconsider bidding on the trips that are offered during our auctions.
I hope to see the action footage you spoke of. Again, a great trip and awesome report. Thanks

we saw a number of fish in the channels, but the majority of what we raised seemed to be smaller. I do know of a handful of larger fish that were caught near the channel including a 50 on wednesday when we were there. We concentrated on weed beds out in the main lake when looking for fish.

All of our pike were caught in/around the channels. the pic of the pike was the largest of the trip. Bidding on the trip was the best thing I could have done. I have been out on several guided trips and Matt was by far the most knowledgeable and entertaining guide I have ever been out with. I will book him again given the opportunity.
Here are the videos. if you are at work i would turn the volume down as there is some language.
You'll notice the school of bait on the finder, then Matt makes a comment about me making a liar out of him as he said that bait was a good color in that area. I tell him i'll throw it until they bite, and get bit on the next cast. As soon as the fish gets in the net the hooks come out.

Lenny , just a FYI . Vertical stacks of baitfish are emerald shiners. See this also on the St Lawrence and Ottawa River.
To "match the hatch" like you see recommended so often wouldn't be a black and red tube ! 😉 BTW ,I always though looking different than the baitfish worked better.
Occasionally on LSC you'll see muskies crashing the shiners on top.
