I am an avid fisherman from S. Jersey (Philly area) I enjoy fishing for Largemouth, and Striped bass (both in Saltwater and when they run in the river to spawn.)and many other species. Anyways, I am done Saltwater Surfcasting and Drum fishing For the year and I love bassin, but I want to get into something with a little more kick. The pictures on this site have gotten my heart beating. I thought that the only muskie fishing in this area was in the extreme north parts of NJ and PA. I am interested in taking a trip to Mercer to try for one of these toothy beasts. If anyone one could help me, what are the best times to fish for muskies, is it at night, dawn or early afternoon, also what areas do I target. And, what lures are best to use? Also I have a 12ft john boat with a 5hp. merc(if necessary). and a 35lb trolling motor is this a large enough boat for Mercer and for Muskie fishing?? What size boat do people recomend for the upper deleware river I have never really boated in the river much further north than Philly. Do people fish the entire river for Muskie(tiger, or regular) or is it just in the Deleware River Water Gap area?

I would also appreciate it if anyone more experienced in this type of fishing could send us in the right direction of some other lakes in the South or Central Jersey area Where we could catch muskies, Hybrid bass or smallies. My little bro. has never caught a smallie and wants one real bad. Thanks in advance

First and most importantly, muskie fishing is catch and release ONLY. You need the proper nets and tools to be successful and not harm the fish. I would recommend that you hook up with one of our guys at a muskie school to learn exactly what you are asking.

To add my .02 worth, I would echo the comments of Berksman about connecting with one of the seasoned veterans on the club muskie school. I have been a Bass, Striper, and Walleye guy for a long time and have made a promise to myself to catch a 30+ inch Muskie this season. I had the opportunity to attend the Muskie school this year and had the entire day to spend on the water with someone that I could ask questions and show me the appropriate equipment and techniques for these toothy hawg type fish. Although we didn't boat any muskies, I had a positive experience and know it improved my learning curve.

Yes thanks for the info. I am a catch and release only fisherman I have no interest in keeping fish just taking pictures with em. As for the school I am very interested. Is this a once a year thing or is it done at certain times of the year? Also I already have lots of gear like the net and such, for striper fishing. and again thanks for the info.

Hey bass guy , Anytime you can get on the water is a good time to fish muskies.the only really bad time is when the water temp gets into the high 70s. And yes early and later in the day is better for summer fish. You can start with any of your Striper lures for starters. Mercer is pretty featurless so fish typical spots like points, breaklines etc... good pair of hook outs and hook cutters are a must have these fish are fragile and wont survive a long drawn out release in the bottom of a boat . if you can try a water release in the net also carefully hold the fish horizonally when taking pictures. Muskie school is a spring event. Matt L

Thanks Matt. So the School is held once a year in the spring? well I will definately be attending this coming spring. What would you recomend as far as rods/reels? I have some medium heavy LMB striper rods in the 6.5 to 7ft. range will these be okay? Oh and one last thing what is good for live bait or Are large soft plastic jerkbaits and crankbaits better? and if artifical is better what are good colors?

Hey,

Just a note, and this is up to the individual, but on the whole we don't advocate live bait. It is too easy for the fish to inhale a livebait rig. More often than not, if this is the case, it is basically a death sentence for the fish. Crankbaits, twitch baits, gliders and bucktail/spinners are what the majority of us use.

First Off, Hi Guys....Found this site from Eastern PA Fishing Reports message boards. Was reffered by a member over there.
I too have been fishing other species and getting the itch to try for these monsters.

Is the Muskie school a guided trip or class room setting, (asking cuz, I have been reading hearing about Bass 101 at Lehigh U)?

Is there any set date for the Muskie school trip(s) next spring?
I guess, from this
What is the cost, and what body of water?

Are there any guides for hire through the site that I could do something this year. This month or next/

Thanks,
Vince
Maybe I should have started a new thread for this.

Vince, thanks for checking us out. Our musky school is generally in the spring where we do it all on the water. We are dedicated to catch and release so we teach proper handling techniques along with showing you the proper tools and equipment required to insure a healthy fish on release.
If you want to do something this fall, I'm sure we could get someone to take you out and teach you the basics.
