Hello guys,
I've used braid for most of my striper/surf fishing plugs over the last 3 years. I typically use 30 lb Power Pro, a small 50 lb. barrel swivel, 2'-3' of 30 lb flour leader and a duo lock snap.
With Muskie fishing do you guys use braid? Do you tie the braid directly to a steel leader? How long of a leader is necessary?
Thanks for the advice.

Hey Mike , Personal preference on the line and what you a comfortable with , I use 80 lbs power pro , I feel confident it will not break and still get the fish in fast , for a quick and safe release , I know one friend who uses 30 lbs mono without a leader and he does fine 25 years experience helps My leaders are usually 12 inches long I use seven strand 80 lbs, single strand 150 lbs and 130 lbs floro. hopr this helps . matt

All the leaders I use have barrel swivels on them and I use stay lok snaps to attach lures to ,
Clear water yes and lure action I have been tying my own leaders and yes it is stiff I still use a barrel swivel at one end and staylok snap to attach lures.

MattThanks for reply. So you tie your 80 lb PP directly to the steel leader correct? You also mentioned that you use 130 lb flourocarbon leader. Is in place of a steel leader when clear water conditions distate a more stealth approach? Isn't that pretty stiff to tie knots with?

I use Stealth Tackle 130 lb 14" flouro leaders and have been very satisfied with their durability. I use a 130 lb 36" Stealth Trolling leader on one setup only for trolling, but have done just as well using the regular 14" size for trolling too. I downsize to the next smaller size Stay-Loc snap for a smaller profile. When the snap starts getting silver at the end or worn from bending it or a musky messing it up, it's time to replace the snap, snaps are a dime a dozen.
Main line is 80 lb power pro (or, 65 lb on the Curado 301 reel), I tie the leader on with a palomar knot. The most important thing is probably to check you line often and re-tie if there is any doubt. You don't want any weakness in your gear when that big musky strikes! Good Luck.
