Trying for 1st Muskie

HELLO everyone! Well I have been wanting a "skie" for a long time now, and I've made up my mind to go for it this year. I am in northeast PA and the nearest lakes with muskies in them near me are Belmont Lake, Prompton Lake and I have been hearing about muskies in Lower Woods. Any suggestions for the beginner (ME) on presentation, lures..etc. or a way to approach these lakes would be great. Thanks for the help.

As always, we turn to our local "expert" Musky Ed for info on the lakes in that area. Interestingly enough, all three of those lakes are to be fished for our spring tourny on June 10. You are more than welcome to join us.
Musky Ed has a great deal of knowledge of those lakes and I'm sure can help put you on some fish. Just remember, it's strictly catch and release.

We may only see what we look for.

All 3 lakes are very different from each other, yet they offer many of the same characteristics. Belmont can be cold water for quite a while. and has large weedy flats on one end with some deep cliffs in other areas. I've thrown primarily bucktails and spinnerbaits on this lake. I have at times thrown small crankbaits. I have had better success catching bass and PICKEREL on this lake.

Lower Woods is a little more classic in it's approach. Lots of weedbeds, points, downed wood, flats, just a nice mix in a more confined area. Again, I count on spinnerbaits because of the wood, but I will throw crankbaits in many areas and a few Topwaters.

Prompton is the biggest and I throw anything and everything here. Probably more bucktails than anything, till I get near deep water, than I will throw in some of my crankbaits. I feel I use more topwater lures on this lake than the other, but I also use them on Lower Woods a fair amount. Depends on when I'm there.

I'm still experimenting with these 3 lakes. You can also hit Lackawanna State Park. Muskies are in there. I'm going to try Wallenpaupak this year. Need to talk to some of the locals for more info on that lake, but it looks like it could have good potential. I wish the state would stock this lake more. It's the biggest in this area.

Good luck and hopefully we'll see each other on the water. If you see a guy throwing Musky lures, but pulling in Pickerel, that's me!!! ;D

Thanks for the info guys. I havent ever been up to Belmont so I dont know much about it. I was looking at PA's muskie stockings for 2003 through 2005 and out of the three lakes Lower Woods is the only one not stocked. I couldnt find anything earlier so I dont know how long these fish have been in these lakes. I was also wondering Musky Ed, is it worth a try to fish these lakes for my first muskie or would it be better to start somewhere else because I am not sure how productive they are, I just know that these awesome fish inhabit these lakes.

These are the lakes I'm trying to catch my first PA musky on. And don't forget Lackawanna State Park. Are there more productive lakes? That's a relative term as Musky fishing is nothing like bass or panfish. Many a times a good outing is when you just see a musky follow your lure. Gets the heart pumping! 😮 And how far are you willing to travel? Other lakes in the region to consider are Beltzville, Francis Slocum and Wallenpaupak. I'm heading to Wallenpaupak today! ;D And the river throughout this area can be a very good source. It's really what and where do you feel most confident. The more you're on a body of water the more familiar you become with it and the more confident you become. Then it's just being in the right spot at the right time. A good website to check out is: muskyhunter.com I go there a lot and hit the message boards frequently. I also love the magazine! Lots of great info. Good luck and let's try to hook up this year and pound some waters!
