If your lure gets fouled in weeds during a retrieve and after trying to rip the lure through the water to try and yank the weeds off, it doesn't work. Do you still do an 8 and have you ever caught anything even though your bait was completely covered or even partially covered in weeds?

My thought was always that the bait is to mimic a fish and not many fish swim around covered in weeds. If my bait was fouled I would just reel it in, fix it, and recast. But I guess you never know. I'm sure someone will have a story about the lunker that hit a weed covered lure!

I've never caught a fish with a bait covered in weeds but having read about this subject on other forums plenty of people have claimed muskies being caught in this scenario. I never figure 8 with weeds,,,but could probably be talked into it. I tend to think it all comes down to getting the bait in the strike zone during the feeding period and it's possible to catch a muskie on a dirty sock with hooks (not that I'll ever test that theory)...color, action, size, weeds or no weeds, etc.. are all secondary....but what do I know 😮

Chad- A few years back I had a 43" fish nail a jerk bait covered in weeds. I mean covered- not just a weed or two. I was trying to "rip" the weeds off and it came out of nowhere!

The only thing that I can think of is that it was fall and lots of weeds were dying and starting to flow down river. Maybe it did not appear too unnatural that a fleeing fish would bump into these weeds and even cause them to move significantly or "drag" them along. Had there not been a flow of weeds I doubt the fish would have looked twice.

Would I figure 8 a weed covered lure? Well, I guess if I had a follow. If a fish follows, no matter how stupid it looks there's something that got it's attention. -Eric

Weed , leaves They get excited Last fall i had a fish go after a lure with a glove sized leaf attached to the rear hook twice. it appeared the leaf did not bother the fishes instinct to eat a salad with that steak.
