lookin for some basic tips on river skis for this time of year. About this time last year I put in some time along the banks of the schuylkill, which isnt such a great musky fishery, but never saw a fish. Got out the other day, wasnt expecting to catch or see anything, and I didnt, but I want to change this. What depths, structure am I looking for? what kinds of baits should I fish? been throwing pikies and bombers... other species of fishing I like jigging with zooms, got a lot of confidence in jigging, maybe try a 7" fin-s type plastic? anyone use jigs with success for muskies? better question, anyone have much success on the schuylkill for muskies?
I did catch my first musky (of any size) through the ice this year at marsh creek, probably a 31" fish, on a little jiggin rod and swedish pimple. Pretty awesome, trying to have a little more success with muskies this year, mainly lookin for one of decent size, 40"+.

Hi Chris,
I love fishing the rivers in the winter too, in fact I was wading the schulkill a few days ago (no fish seen). The schulkill is a tuff river, I've never even seen a musky out of there but haven't fished it much. I check the water levels a lot this time of year, here is the link: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/rt
I've been wanting to do a musky float trip down the schulkill in my aluminum canoe, that sounds like a lot of fun!
My first choice for winter river muskies is the susquehanna, also have fished on the lehigh and deleware rivers. I like when the rivers stabilize for a couple of days and there is a good moon phase. Some lures I've caught winter river muskies on are: all black bulldawg, glitter walleye bulldawg, 7 and 9 inch grandmas (ripping them fast, blue, walleye and black colors) and shallow invader.
Structure, try any slack pools or rock ledges.
Good Luck!

Anything to add on river muskies during the cold months? I'm fairly new at this myself. Lure selection, presentation or structure?.....the water levels look pretty nuts right now but there may be a chance of a musky bite once things settle down. Hopefully we don't freeze over right away, it's going to be COLD this weekend!

I love the Jmac jigs, have yet to catch a musky on them, but it's just a matter of time. One technique I love and was talking with Jeremy about earlier was sweeping a regular bulldawg. Just a slow presentation on the bulldawg, where it's almost getting caught on bottem and adjacent to the deepest water is a great technique in cold water...or anytime of year for that matter. Just slowly sweep them and bring up the slack, then repeat. Getting them un-stuck is an art form, just pop them out, make sure to set the hook hard if the bottem moves!!! ;D
