6 Phantom softtail balance?

OK guys, I know some of you like Phantoms. I had a 6" softtail that worked great with pretty much any retrieve. It quickly became my go-to lure. It had plenty of tooth marks and I even had to replace the tail. Then I lost it when a fish got hooked in the back, the whole mess got tangled, and the 80# Power Pro got pinched between hook points and cut. So, of course I bought two more.

The two new ones ride a bit nose high. When retrieved agressively, they pop out of the water. Have any of you guys noticed the same thing? Is it simply a matter of a heavier leader or snap? I am pretty sure I am using the same type of flourocarbon leader I did on the older one. I am guessing that switching to steel will fix this, but I don't want to change leaders for just one lure.

By the way, I am using the 6" instead of the bigger sizes because it seems our tigers like their lures a bit on the smaller side.

I've thrown a heavier hook up front on one I had just to keep it down more. Don't know if it will run the same if you change only one hook though. And try turning the tail down instead of pointing up.

Thanks, I will take a look at the tails and try the heavier hook when I get out this weekend.

If I remember correctly, there was a batch of phantoms that had this problem. I'll see if I can find it.

Going to a steel leader helped a bit, but I still can't work it with the reckless abadon I would like. More experimenting is in order, unless it turns out that it is from the bad batch.

I didn't mess with it too much because the fish were really chomping on a different lure.

I would contact them about it. I believe the batch was around 2012-2013 time frame. Phantom was replacing them for free.
