I'm not having a good year so far an it just gets worse!I was out on Sunday an spooled up some new suffix on my calcutta.half way through the day I noticed my line getting wore out in certain spots!I don't think much of it till a little later in the day Jesse looks at my stcroix legend rod an says my tips broke.my hart dropped. So I take a look at it an the tip were there is a plastic insert is on the top has a half inch chip on it.now it all make sense.my question is can I replace the tip my self or should I take it to a custom rod builder?Jesse told me to talk to the rod rep but some how I think there gonna say it was from abuse to the rod.also if I can do it myself what's the process of removing an installing the new tip!thanks guys

Hey Tim,
I had the same problem with an old St. Croix Premier PS70HF spinning rod, the plastic insert in the rod tip came out. I'm not sure if this would work for the Legend, but hears my experience with fixing up the premier spinning rod. I tried the Laker Rod Tip Repair Kit (I think they have them at cabelas). It was actually pretty easy to do. You just heat the broken rod tip to loosen the glue, pull the old one off and glue on a new one, they give you the glue with the kit. I only got to use that setup for a little while though, my neighbor acidentally dumped it in the lake.
Anyway, they seem like durable rod tips and come in three sizes in the kit. Just measure the exact inside diameter of the rod tip your using before hand to make sure to get the right size replacement, there should be something that would do the job at cabelas.
Gook luck

I've returned 2 st. croix rods (avid and Premier) in the past yer or so to have broken rod tips fixed. Both times they fixed or replaced them with no hassle at all. I think I only paid shipping costs. These were broke not from wear but neglect on my part. I wouldn't hesitate calling them on it. Good Luck!

It's extremely easy to replace the rod tip. All you need is a heat source and a glue gun. Many sports stores, like Dave's in Doylestown, stock a variety of rod tips.
As stated in the earlier post, heat up the tip, pull the old tip off, squirt some hot glue on the rod, put the new tip in place, and clean up any excess glue before it hardens. You have to make sure that all the guides are in line before the glue cools.
We may only see what we look for.
