hi guys,
its that time of year again were im looking to up grade my musky gear.Any info would be much appreciated.im looking to get a new reel by next weekend.Im looking at a shimano calcutta te or a daiwa luna.Maybe this is a stupid question to ask,I know eveyone is probably gonna pick the calcutta. But i went up an looked at bolth reels the luna looks like a copy of the calcutta. The price is 220.The calcutta im looking at is 349.The reason im asking this is throught the year you know the reels take a shit load of beating.I can almost purchase 2 lunas for the price of one.i guess what im asking is should i sacrifice a little bit of quality and money for a reel im gonna eventually replace or go with the more expensive reel .Know matter what ill purchase eithier one.Money isnt really an issue but at the same time if i could save 200 bucks thats 200 bucks.just looking for any imput on this. Thanks alot guys
if it helps one of these reels is going on a st.croix tournament legend rod 7'9 mh mod-fast action. <<<<><<<

Happy New Year Everyone! [&]]
Both of those reels are great quality, I'm sure you'll love whichever one you choose.
I've been using the Luna for only the later part of this year and had no problems, never used the TE, so I can't offer any good comparisonsr. Just looking at the specs of the two, they have very similar weight and gear ratio. One thing I really like about the Luna is that I can palm it and you can comfortably grip it when casting, the large handle is great too.
I think the Shimano is more well known throughout the musky world and has been around longer.
They are both great reels.
good luck,

Both the Calcutta and the Luna are good reels (I'd go with the Luna over the Calcutta).
You should really be looking at the Shimano Curado DHSV, which is a much nicer Muskie reel than either of the others. Both Joe T. and Greg Ridge are using the Curado, and I've been extremely impressed by it when I can pry it out of Joe's hands for a few casts. I like my Penn reels, but the Curado fits soooooo nicely into the palm of your hand.
Not only is it a good reel, it's a great bargain. The Curado can be had for $199.99 at most of the discount outdoors shops (Outer Banks, Boater's World, etc.) and there is a $50. rebate good from now until April 30, 2008. The rebate is called the Ultimate Reel Deal Rebate, and the coupon is available online. The reel nets out at less than $150. - a steal!
