AFTER AVIDLY FISHING FOR OVER 30 YEARS I FINALLY LANDED MY FIRST MUSKIE ON FRIDAY NIGHT.
I DRIVE PAST LAKE NOCKAMIXON (aka THE DEAD SEA) ON MY HOME FROM WORK AND HAVE GOT IN THE HABIT
OF TOSSING MY ROD IN THE TRUCK SO I COULD FISH A FEW HOURS AFTER WORK ON FRIDAYS.
WELL, THIS PAST FRIDAY I WALKED DOWN TO THE SPILLWAY BELOW THE DAM TO FISH FOR AN HOUR OR SO BEFORE DINNER. I WAS FISHING ULTRALIGHT GEAR AS USUAL BECAUSE I ENJOY THE CHALLENGE OF LANDING A NICE BASS OR PICKEREL ON LIGHT TACKLE. I TIED ON A 1/4 OZ ROOSTER TAIL AND ON THE FIRST CAST GOT ABSOLUTELY CRUSHED. HE BROKE THE WATER IMMEDIATELY AND I KNOW IT WAS A REAL NICE MUSKY. I FOUGHT HIM ABOUT 15-20 MINUTES BEFORE BEING ABLE TO GET HIM IN. HE LITERALLY OWNED ME FOR THAT TIME. HE MEASURED A RESPECTFUL 38" AND WAS A PURE BRED. AFTER GATHERING MY WITS I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY RELEASE HIM. PROBLEM WAS, THERE WAS NOBODY THERE BUT ME AND THE BIRDS WHEN I CAUGHT HIM SO NO PICTURE, NEEDLESS TO SAY.
IT WAS WELL DESERVED BECAUSE I HAVE MADE TWO TRIPS TO THE ST. LARRY AND ENDURED 10 DEGREE TEMPERATURES WITH NO NO MUSKY....
BETTER YET. I WILL BE GOING OUT WITH MATT LYSEK THIS WEEKEND FOR "MUSKY SCHOOL"> DID I GRADUATE TOO SOON?? No, I STILL HAVE ALOT TO LEARN BUT HAVE A GREAT SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT.
OH YEAH, THE FISH BROKE MY ROD IN THE PROCESS, ADDING TO THE STORY.
PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF!!!!!!!!

Congrats LONGSHOT! Great story, but I'm afraid you are now DOOMED. After an experience like that, you'll never be fully satisfied with one of those BAIT SIZED fish again. Play close attention on Saturday, as you"ll be learning from one of our best, (club MASTERS champ last year). Best of luck!!

Congrats on the first Muskie!!!
Given that you're fishing with Matt, you may have another story or two to add to the board by the end of the weekend. Watch him and listen closely to what he says, he's one of our best.
