Is anyone out there using fluorocarbon leaders? Pros and cons? I was thinking about making a few. What brand and #test would be good?

I've been using the ones Archie and I made last spring. We used 85lb. Seaguar Flourocarbon with Muskie sized Norman Speedclips and Cabela's Premium Ball Bearing Swivels. Also used stainless steel spring loop/chafe guards and aluminum crimp sleeves. All of this top of the line material costs a bit of money, but it as been worth it.

I heard a lot of negative comments from the Pros in the seminars in Pittsburgh about using crimped leaders, but Archie and I have caught a number (over 12) of fish and made thousands of casts on our homemades and not had a single failures, either casting or trolling.

I just found a tiny nick in one of my leaders a couple of days ago so I took it apart and will use the springs, swivel and speed clip for a new leader. A nice way to recycle!

Check out the preceding posts on leaders for the exact recipe for our leaders.

Ive caught alot of fish with flouro both casting and trolling.I buy my leaders instead of making them.Keep an eye on them though. If there nicked you should change it.Some times if you've had them on a long time they will become discolered .I change them. Also if your using a glider jerkbait you'll want to use a steel leader not flouro. The lure tends to get caught up in the flouro.Almost like it cant get out of the way of the lure.Bob

Bob brings up a good point. I just added a titanium leader to my arsenal. Some glide baits hook your leader every 2nd or 3rd cast if your not using a solid leader. The flourocarbon wasn't working with Mantas and Phantoms, so I'm going to try the titanium.

Thanks for all the input, guys!!! I guess I'll make up a few to see for myself how they work. Was getting tired of using steel leaders and having them kink all the time. Not to mention my lures seemed to wrap around them on casts an awful lot. I had switched to titanium this past year, but man are they costly! I figure with the $ I spend on the titanium, I might as well try the fluoro route. Thanks again!!!!!
