bought some straight wire buchertail leaders (pg 125 r+h cat.) for jerk baits. one has a bb swivel one has a crane(?) swivel. whats the difference? what determines when i should use each one or the other? should i use a swivel on my leaders for bucktails? i had a greg thomas leader (pg. 125 #110-268) that was fluro. with 4" wire at one end no swivel at other, attached with dbl. uni-knot. i assume because it was 38" long it was for trolling.????

Always use a long leader when trolling, always. I would deffinitly always use a barrell swivel when throwing bucktails or your lines going to be a twisted up mess. I really like the "stringease" snaps. They have a "saftey" on them so they don't pop open.

Swivels are mainly used for any lures who turn and can twist you line.. bucktails..etc. I am not sure why Greg's don't come with a swivel..I don't use them, so maybe someone who does can help you.

As for the crane swivel vs the bb swivel.. The bb swivels turn much easier and smoother, but I make my own leaders and have been using SPRO crane swivels and don't notice a diference.. the main thing is the crane are usually 60%-80% cheaper then the BB. So for the price diference i use the crane.

I checked out that leader and all it is is a 3 ft. piece of 80# flouro that is tied to the main line with a uni to uni knot, the flouro is tied to a short piece of straight wire attached to a stringease snap. It sound's like nothing out of the ordinary, and I sort of doubt I'll start hammering 50 inchers by using one of these leaders, as mentioned in the description. 😉

I use a swivel all the time, whether it's on pre bought stealth 130# flouro or my homade 140# straight wire leaders. No good reason, it's just what I prefer and have always used. Many musky fishermen have had great success not using swivels too.

Tim,

Don't the split rings get loose or begin to open up after you change baits a few times?

Flouro, no. Steel, yes. With flouro and an 80# knot (palomar knot and something I use for small buckails or other stuff), which would not handle constant abuse from putting a spling ring on and off, just use a #4 or #5 stringease snap. With 130# fluro from stealth they are crimped and replacing a splt ring over the life of the leader would deteriate the most imprtant part of the leader, the end. Use a stringease #5 snap.

In my opinion, use a snap with flouro and use a split ring or snap with straight wire.

This past spring Gene Seuring of Leeders and Lures contacted me to take his son-in-law out on the water. Found out that he makes killer quality leaders. I've been using his Disappearing Pink Floro Carbon all season and won't switch until I find something better.

He'll make custom sizes to order. You should check it out. Even makes custom blades for bucktails with logo or pic on the blade. Imagine the possibilities... lol.

Anyway... his contact info...ooops. Before I step in it again guys is it okay to post his contact info? Let me know. I think the product is great and got some for our VP.
