penguin,
Ive been using a manta alot lately.I had the same problem but im using a 12 in single strand leader,i fish the river all the time,i have a 80% lower hang up rate now.Hope this helps.
I also have a question to add to this .I was out on the lehigh today an had a upper thirties fish follow all the way in to were i was wading.I twitched to make the lure glide. The ski followed it as it was falling it stoped so i did it again. It followed it more,Then as it was falling it stoped again so as the lure came close to me i went into a figure eight an the ski came in at it on the eight but as i was going into the first, circle of the eight the ski turned an swam off slow.Im wondering if anyone had this happen also an whats your solution to getting them to commit..Thanks guys hope this helped penguin. :-

Not sure if this helps and I am sure you will get alot better response down the line, but no matter the bait, I have alot of problems with line/hook tangle in current with bigger lures. I am basically a top water angler and the only thing I see that helped that is to speed everything up... run the dog instead of walk always leaving no slack.

The solid leader is a real key for the Manta. To me however the manta is a bait that is used with a cadence, that is a consistent retrive all the way back to the boat or bank. You can tap the lure harder or softer to get difference in the movements of the bait but if you stop you will foul with the leader many times. Also, the manta does not like over hard pulls. This will cause it to double back on itself and foul the leader.
Tim, one on the negatives of the manta is that on the pause, the bait does not have an action as it sinks. Unlike the Hellhound, Phantom or Musky Treat which all shimmy on the way down. A lot of fish in cold water will hit the bait as it sinks and baits with a shimmy or roll on the way down are better than a Manta is those situations.
That beig said, Manta's are one of the best gliders out there and few baits will glide as far as they do.

Yes, I have had this problem casting beleivers and mantas. Those lures seem to hook the line more than other lures, maybe it's just the nature of the beast.
Or it could be some kind of cosmic force affecting fishing conditions??? [0]] Some days, I can't stay on a good drift, keep the lure from catching the line, keep from getting snaged....not to mention the possibility of even seeing a musky. God I love musky fishing though. 8)
So much for a better response to the original question ???
I digress, IMO, keeping the slack out of the line should help this problem.

Lehigh- That is one of the most frustrating things about glide baits- they don't have the same action in a figure eight if you just drag them through the water. Almost every other bait will have similar action in a figure eight. One thing that I have been trying is leaving enough line out to still work the bait and working it in a square or circle pattern rather than a figure eight. This allows you to still get a similar action out of the lure since you're not turning it as much.
This September I had my first fish doing this. The fish followed and turned off under the boat. I casted back, and brought the lure straight back to the boat. When the lure got close to the boat I changed the direction 90 derees to make the lure run parrallel to the boat. On the second or third twitch the fish nailed it from underneath! It was one of the best strikes I have ever seen. I know this would be a lot harder from the shoreline, but that's part of the disadvantage of the shoreline. -Eric
