I wanted an honest opinion on the package that Rollie & Helen's Musky shop sells. Its there pro package. As I stated in my intro I am new to Musky fishing, converted from a tournament Bass fishermen.
That was my old life and my new addiction is Musky fishing, I really need help from you guys as to what you would recommend as far as tackle, rods, and reels go. If any has time to let me know if this package is worth it in your opinion or not it would be greatly appreciated. I've talked to Jim out there (he buys material from the company I work for now) and of course he always pushes the pro package.
Also what kind of boats do you guys like, again that's something I am now in the market for. I own a tracker (I know its not a Lund or Tuffy) pro team 185 that is 10 years old and I am looking for a new personal boat. I know alot of folks hate Trackers but I really like the Targa V18. Thoughts. And again I really don't want to drop 50 to 60 grand on a boat, Tracker has always been good to me. Y'all probably hate me now for mentioning Tracker Boats, but your honest opinions good or bad are welcome.
Thanks for your time,

$600.00 for the Package from Rollie and Helen's, I think is a bit pricey...but that's just me. My recommendation is to buy a good heavy rod of choice ( Bull Dawg M - MH) and a reasonably priced reel ( Abu Ambassador), and go from there. You'll have all kind of differing opinions, but that's good.
As far as the baits, get comfortable with a couple baits initially, and gain some confidence with them, and then move on to others.
As far as a boat, we have all different types of boats in our club. Whatever you feel most comfortable and affordable in, go with that. And by the way ,I have a small bass tracker, and have had pretty good luck with that so far. No need for Tuffys, unless you get one for everyone ;D
Just my two cents...
Sometimes you've got to "jiggle' it, and sometimes you've got to give it one big

hey whats up castaway, i am relatively new to musky fishing as well, and am by no means an expert on the tackle, but for what its worth if you spend alot of money on good quality gear you only cry once (when you pay for it), if you spend a little money on cheap gear you cry every time you use it. 8)
i am not sure of the pro package you are referring to,but if it is the one i am thinking of (pg.74), i thought the reel wasn't all that great,(no offense to those who have it), and in my humble opinion that is the one place you don't want to skimp. the whole package you only save $33.25. for the money you would spend on the package you could probably buy stuff from club members or else where on the net and get more bang for your buck.some guys have literally brand new stuff or hardly used stuff they would sell for a fair price.
my first rod i bought was a 7' rod which was great compared to my bass rods, and good for some smaller musky lures, now i have an 8'6" rod and find it is much better for throwing the majority of musky lures. 8) as they say there is my 2 cents.. have fun on your trip

castaway,
To address the boat portion of your question, it's going to depend on the type of muskie fishing you plan to do as there's no perfect boat!
Lot of the guys who fish the rivers opt for jet boats. I tend to the majority of my fishing on lakes and big water. Trackers are great boats, have owned two and they get the job done. I would have gone with the Targa 18 myself but I'm not crazy with the new layout and the narrow gunnels as opposed to previous years. I have an 1850 Lund Fisherman now and love it. Serves as a great family boat during the summer and its great for trips up north in the fall.
The console is pushed forward to allow for more fishing room in the back for trolling. Still plenty of room upfront for casting but some guys would prefer a larger area.
If the majority of your fishing is spent casting, consider a boat with lower sides. This will give you better boat control during those windy days.
Good luck!

I like how George put it, get comfortable with a few lures first. You really don't need that package. You'll realize what lures work for ya. Just get one or two crankbaits, jerkbaits, twitch, etc. And take it from there. That package is a very "wide" range of stuff.
ITS NOT THE SIZE OF YOUR BOAT
ITS THE SIZE OF WHATS ON YOUR BUMPBOARD!
