So I bought two Calcutta 400B reels. They have their VBS (Variable Brake System) which is a few little brakes that you can adjust to "on" or "off". I think there are about eight of these. They are supposed to brake the spool early in the cast, and the normal thimble adjustment is for the end of the cast. I turned them all off and did some test casts and it seemed fine. Does anyone else have these reels and maybe some advice on how they use them?

i have two of them. 401te's. they are my first baitcasters so i dont have much to compare them too, just got a revo toro r61 only used it a couple times so verdict is still out. one calcutta i adjust the thumb knob for each lure according to weight, seems to work fine that way. the other one even with the thumb knob all the way tight the spool is still to loose, i just havent gotten around to openning the reel up and adding brake to it. there are directions in the box,if you got them new, the toro i set it for the first lure and dont think i have touched it again, regardless of lure weight. dont know if this helps, but being new to baitcasters i dont know too much :-
i saw a guy at the 22 spring tourney,he had atleast 6 of them on his boat you might try their site.
