tipping

Guys,

I know this may sound like sacrilege to some, but I have a non-muskie related fishing trip coming up this Friday to Erie for some steelhead on the fly rod. This will be my first guided trip and I'm curious what the standards are for tipping.

I thought I'd posted this yesterday but I guess I forgot to click submit. Sorry if it posts twice.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt - My rule of thumb is if he's the owner, he gets nothing extra. If he's working for another guy, then I usually tip him around 15% of the cost. Unless he sucks then he gets a lot less. If he turns you on to a lot of fish and gives you good information, then give him more. It's up to you.
Hope this helps.

I hope the musky gods don't get upset with you.

I'm jealous!

It's been a few years since I was up to my ass in ice water fishing for those silver bullets. I understand the fishing is outstanding this year.

I usually tip according to how the fishing went. If the guide puts me on a lot of fish, 20% (or even more-depending on his fee) is a fair number. If the guide is a jerk, or his equipment isn't top notch, I might not tip at all. If the guide tried hard, but the fish didn't cooperate, 10% is fair.

Fear the Musky God, for he may smite thine favorite lure!

I'm tipping 20% for a day of fishing unless we do very good or he goes out of his way to show me alot of water and info. Then its more. That includes the owner.I figure he's working hard to put us on fish so he should be tipped also.Bob

Oh boy, this topic has been beat to death on alot of other boards.

I think that the tip should be independent of the day's success. If the guide sees to it that you have an enjoyable time and helps you improve as a fisherman, then he has done his job well. I would much rather have a pleasant guide show me techniques and spots on a new lake but not get me any fish than have a jerk put me on a bunch of fish but not do anything to increase my long term success.

Even though the $200-$300 guide fee may seem like alot, consider what it takes to really cover expenses and have enough left over to pay the other bills. Then consider what happens if somebody cancels or if business is slow for a few weeks. Tipping is still voluntary, but unless the guy really didn't do anything at all, he'll still get something from me.

Thanks for the "tips" guys. Wow that was bad. As it turns out I got the call last night that the trip's cancelled due to the weather. Apparently we wouldn't be able to start until the afternoon because of the ice-bergs. Anyway, your suggestions will come in handy sooner or later.

Thanks,

Matt
